Pre-production

The pre-production for Trainspotting lasted 7 weeks. Pre-production usually takes 4 to 7 weeks depending on your budget. First thing in pre-production is casting, Ewan McGregor got the rule of Renton in Trainspotting.
Rehearsals started on the second week in May. They took place in a rented flat in the Glasgow tower block. You do not need all actors to film as most have only one or two filming days. Trainspotting was set in Edinburgh but filmed mostly in Glasgow.
Set design
You discuss what aspects of the film need research on. Trainspotting was drawn from real life however was very much exaggerated. After this you start planning sets referring to photographs and sketches.
Props
Around six weeks before production you should start to buy props. On Trainspotting 98% of props bought were very cheap.
Most customers in Trainspotting were their own, including old football shirts and ripped genes. North Face provided equipment for hiking.
The Shoot
This lasts 35 days. 5 times a week. Nights in Scotland are too short therefore some scenes that were meant to be 11pm had to be done at 4:30am.
